Week of Aug 10, Cycling 1

|

Distance: 5.35 miles - Time: 28:55 - Avg Pace: 11.1 mph - Max Pace: 21.1 mph

Legs weren't feeling great and since today Higdon calls for either 2 miles of running or cross training, I opted for the later. I also decided to just take it easy given how things are going. Yes, 11.1 mph is slow, but it felt good and I think I'll be in good shape for tomorrow's run.

Week of Aug 3, Cycling

|

Distance: 6.96 miles - Time: 30:45 - Avg Pace: 13.6 mph - Max Pace: 27.2 mph

Hard ride this morning, rather hilly and what seemed to be a few more stop lights. Still managed an increase of pace. Next week I'll be bumping it up to 40 mins, so maybe I'll shoot for about 9.5 miles then. Apparently, bikers are much friendlier than runners. I got several waves and a couple of very audible hello's. That would be unusual for runners (at least in my experience).

Week of July 27, Cycling

|

Distance: 6.72 miles - Time: 30:34 - Avg Pace: 13.2 mph - Max Pace: 21.4 mph

Good ride today. It was only about 72° out, so that helped, and the route I took was less hilly, so that helped as well. I felt like my effort was less than last week, yet I managed to go slightly faster. Perhaps I'm in better shape as well. The only problem I see now is that biking is definitely fun compared to running (or at least you can feel like you're going fast without too much effort). We'll see how the four-miler feels tomorrow.

Week of July 20, Bike Ride

|

Distance: 6.59 mi - Time: 30:30 - Avg Pace: 13.0 mph - Max Speed: 25.9 mph

First bike ride in I don't know how long. Not easy at all, and in fact quite hilly. The portion of my quads that is right above the knee felt it the most. We'll see how tomorrow's run goes.

Two bike rides today and yesterday - 5 and 3 miles respectively

Just thought I'd post about two quick rides I did. Yesterday I went out with Carrie for a bit, and today with Joey. Neither was taxing on my otherwise really sore legs, which is good. Today's heat was a bit much, but it was good to get some exercise in on these legs.

Bike: 8.58 miles - Time: 44:23 - Pace: 11.6 mph

Same basic ride as before, down to the plaza and back. A little hot, but otherwise fine.

Bike: 8.57 miles - Time: 43'57" - Pace: 11.7 mph

Decided to explore my next mapped out long runs, without the lower loop that I always start out with. Made sure to keep my leg rpm pretty high so that I didn't strain my quads or knees too much. Perfect day for a ride, right around 65°. It's good to bike again.

Run Log: Run: 5.0 mi - Week: 14.0 mi - Total: 213.6 mi

Log: Bike: 5.02 mi - Week: 37.0 mi - Total: 102.7 mi

Took a bike ride with the neighbor again, but it was more fun with my new cyclocomputer. Now I know that I rode 5.02 miles with an average speed of 8.4 mph. After that I drove up to UMKC to run (as I was already quite sweaty.)

I ran a little bit too fast, but am feeling alright. Now to rest up for Saturday's run, which has got me a bit nervous. 3 hours is a long, long time to be running.

Log: Biking: 20.0 mi - Week: 32.0 mi - Total: 97.7 mi

For some reason I thought it'd be fun to bike about 20 miles this morning. I read somewhere the a mile of running is about equivalent to 3-4 miles of biking, which means today's bike ride was about the workout of 5-6.7 miles of running. On paper, that doesn't seem so bad to me, as I can do a 10K without too much difficulty. Unfortunately, I think my lack of experience made this ride a bit more difficult than I anticipated, especially since my biking muscles are not nearly as developed as the running. Live and learn. We'll see how well I'm doing tomorrow. I was planning on another 5 miles, but that may very well change.

Oh, and I paused at the 10-mile mark for a bit and decided to see what jogging would feel like. I have some mild interest in duathlons and triathlons, and had read that the transition from biking to running can be quite difficult. This is very true. While I wasn't too tired from the biking at that point, my legs almost entirely refused to do anything remotely resembling jogging. I think I'll be saving other events until next year.

Run Log: Run: 4.0 mi - Week: 9.0 mi - Total: 208.6 mi

Log: Bike: 5.0 mi - Week: 12.0 mi - Total: 77.7 mi

Ran up at UMKC with 5/1 run/walk splits. Pace was pretty quick with the AC and no hills. Afterwards I went for a bike ride with the neighbor kid, Joey. It was a really easy pace, obviously, and felt great after a relatively quick run.
