What was announced today is, well, absolutely stunning. I honestly think that today's announcement is far more dramatic than the move to intel. This is, well, I'm speechless.
In case you aren't a nerd/geek/macophile, today Apple introduced the beta version of Boot Camp, a nifty little program that allows people to install Windows XP alongside Mac OS X. The implications are of course, beyond what I can imagine right now. What I do know, though, is that some mac users are in for a very, very rude awakening.
You see, those of us mac users who have been so for several years, have forgotten (or better yet were never exposed to) the vicious and malevolent environment of the internet. As mac users, we enjoy the obscurity and security of our nifty unix-based opperating systems. So now, imagine for a moment, millions (ok, hopefully just thousands upon thousands) of mac users downloading this program and then installing XP on their little babies. Sure, it's exciting. (Who knew there was so much software?) It can also be leathal.
You see, your average mac user has never run a virus program on his or her computer (we should probably all be using ClamXav regurally anyway) or dealt with spyware and malware and the like. So now, all these mac users are going to jump on the internet with hardly any protection. It's like jumping into a piranha infested river while bleeding from several open wounds. It ain't gonna be pretty. Worse yet, while I don't know how many viruses work, I will venture a guess and say there is a potential to lose not only the windows partition but also the mac side as well. That is to say, while the mac side is safe, it's still gonna go down with the ship. I hope that this is unlikely, I really do.
All that being said, I may yet try this little program. So many games, right? If I do, though, it'll be from a separate hard drive, and with as many possible safety nets.
Hey, if you're gonna play the field a little bit, you're gonna need to use protection.
